Washtenaw County Millage Rates

Washtenaw County Millage Rates

Each year in Washtenaw County the millage rates are set for the different municipalities in Washtenaw County. Most people get confused because they can vary based on school district within a certain area. For example if you live in Pittsfield Township you may be in the Ann Arbor school district or the Saline school district.

Those millage rates will be different.

Homestead vs Non-Homestead

Everyone in Michigan can claim their primary home as an exemption and your millage will be lower on that home.

Your homestead is the place where you have your permanent home. It is the place to which you plan to return whenever you go away. You must be the owner and occupant or be contracted to pay rent and occupy the dwelling.

You can only have one homestead at a time. Cottages, second homes and property you own and rent/lease to others does not qualify as a homestead.

College dormitories do not qualify as homesteads.

Winter and Summer Millages

In Washtenaw we have been paying our taxes twice a year. Over the last four or five years the winter millage has been getting smaller and the summer millage larger. In a year or two every tax bill will be due in the winter. For those like myself that pay my own property taxes and do not escrow with the mortgage company it will be a one time December hit. Right at Christmas!!! Yikes

Here is a link to the Michigan Government Property Tax Estimator web site, where you can do it yourself, very easy to follow.
